Schwabing and the park - Munich attractions

A guide to Munich attractions in Schwabing and the park

But first, this is how I pay for my Weisswurst and sweet mustard...

MACRO-ART: A huge figure statue on Lutipold Strasse, Schwabing.
Schwabing is to Munich what Soho
is to London or Greenwich Village is to New York – or at least it used to be.

Up to the 20th century it was little more than a village on Munich’s northern outskirts where the
well-to-do kept mansions within easy reach of the Englischer Garten.

Then it became a haven for artists
and the avant-garde and ground zero for Munich’s communist uprising of 1919.

It’s remained the city’s most trendy
address and despite a gradual gentrification that’s pushed housing prices through the roof.

But the LMU university and a thriving pub scene keep it in the scope of the common folk. Stroll down the main drag of Ludwig Strasse before sauntering over east to the Englisher Garten, the world’s largest city park. Then hit the bars as the sun goes down for a few lively cocktails.

"Temple of tombs"
This lordly red and yellow brick building (built 1830s) looks like it’s been yanked off a piazza in Florence and carefully set down in the middle of Munich. (Read more)

Siegestor (Victory Gate)☺☺

"Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, urging peace"
The commanding Siegestor (1852) has seen war and seen peace. Now it mostly sees a lot of traffic from its focal location at the busy Ludwig-Leopold Strasse nexus.

Note: Throughout the Attractions Munich section I’ve designated each sight with one, two, three, four or five. Please read this a rating of interest to visitors and general grooviness, and a guide, of sorts, for prioritizing your visits.
