Continue the balloon tour on Munich picture gallery 2
The second page of great pictures of Munich Germany.
Let's continue the hot air balloon tour.
HOUSE OF THE HOLY: Starting off from the city again, let's go left this time. Here's another view of the Frauenkirche cathedral, which houses the infamous Teufelstritt (Devil's Footprint). New buildings in Munich are restricted to the height of the Frauenkirche's twin domes. |
INTERSECTION: On to the west, we pass over Karlsplatz-Stachus, Munich's busiest intersection with a fountain in the middle. It's a blast to take a run through it on a hot day. |
OLD GROWTH: And here we can see the Alter Botanisches Garten (Old Botanical Gardens). There's a beer garden here, too (Munich's got hundreds of 'em). |
ROUNDABOUT: A little to the north we come to Karolinenplatz. The massive pillar in the middle is an Egyptian-style Obelisk, made of steel from melted-down cannons to honour the victims of another long-gone war. |
CLASSICAL: And here we come to Königsplatz, designed with Greece's Acropolis in mind. It's surrounded by museums. The Nazis used the square as a parade ground and it's now the site of open-air concerts in summer. |

ITALIANATE: On the left down there you can see the Lenbachhaus, an art gallery designed like a Florentine villa. Its showpiece works are from the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group of expressionists which started up in Munich in 1911. |
HEART OF ART: Further to the north we find more museums part of Munich's Kunstareal (art district). Here we can see the Pinakothek der Moderne on the left and the much older Alte Pinakothek on the right. |
PALATIAL: Further out we pass over Schloss Nymphenburg Palace, the former Summer residence of Bavaria's ruling Wittelsbach clan. We'll have to take a look later from ground level, the inside is amazing. |
ON THE LAKE: Behind Nymphenburg Palace is the massive Schosspark, where you can explore a handful of charming little "pleasure palaces". This one, the Badenburg, is my favourite. It has its own indoor swimming pool.

FIELD OF DREAMS: Let's turn east now and start heading back into the city. Hey, there's the Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Park. That was centre stage for the 1972 Munich Olympics. You can take a tour of its crazy webbed roof. |
