This is Caroline's Square, a broad, circular “square” surrounded by grand houses and filled with flowers in the summer.
It was modelled on Paris’ Place de L’Étoile where the Arc de Triomphe stands.
Monument for the fallen
The 29m tall obelisk pays respects to 30,000 Bavarian troops who were part of Napoleon’s ill-fated Russian conquest. It’s made of metal plates from melted down Bavarian cannons and was designed by Leo von Klenze.
The Amerikahaus, the USA’s foot in the door of Munich’s cultural life, is in the south-western corner.
