Kaltenberger Ritterturnier 2010
How the Kaltenberger Ritterturnier
is going down in 2010
A British legend takes centre stage in the Kaltenberg arena in 2010.
Performers in the annual Kaltenberger Knights’ Tournament (Kaltenberger Ritterspiele) are playing out the story of the knights of the round table.
King Arthur and consort Guinevere, Merlin the magician, Lancelot, Mordred and evil mum Morgana all have a part to play.
Now there are probably more holes in the story than in your average block of Swiss cheese and the “acting” is all a little over baked.

The story feels like it was written for children and it’s probably for the better if
you don’t speak German – it makes it easier to follow.
But what you’re really there to see is the action: the mass mock sword fights, the horsemen’s stunts and the tense tête-à-tête of the jousting.
Royal welcome
Before the arena action got underway the organizer of the festival came out to greet the crowd.
That’s no less than Prince Lutipold of Bavaria, third in line to the purely symbolic Bavarian crown.
The prince thought up the Kaltenberg Knights Tournament just over 30 years ago. He said the event had evolved into the “largest middle-ages festival in the world”.

Market a refuge
Thanks to this website I managed to nab press tickets to the Kaltenberg Knights’ Festival which I’d been going to for the past two years anyway.
It was a great day and though I was sweltering under unusually Saharan weather I had to spare a thought for the knights donned up in over 20 kilograms of chain mail.
One of the nicest spots to be in this kind of weather is the “middle-ages market”, a leafy section of the grounds just to the left of the main entrance.
There are food and gift stalls, little historical exhibitions (can you help me build this mud-brick house, anyone?) and a stage where jesters keep things lively.
The Arthurian theme is set to continue – 2010 is just the first part of “The Arthur Trilogy” (Die Artus Trilogie).
The festival is well worth a day-trip from Munich if you’re visiting Bavaria in July.
