Ready for a great knight?

Thanks to Destination Munich I was invited to the press launch for the Kaltenberger Ritterspiele (Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament) a few weeks ago.
If you’re not sure what that is let me tell you about it! It’s the world’s biggest middle-ages festival and takes place about an hour away from Munich.
There is a middle-ages market, a parade, and stage performances like snake dancers and a strong man contest. But what everyone comes to see is the “Turnier” – A jousting competition where knights face off in the arena.

The press launch was fantastic and saw the stars of the show, the big bad “Black Knight” and the goodly Artus (Arthur) barge into a Munich restaurant on their steeds for a little showbiz swordplay.
Now, I worked as a journalist for four years in Australia and I went to a lot of press conferences, but seeing a pair of fully armed knights duke it out on horseback in the middle of restaurant was really something else!

The festival takes place every weekend in July. It’s a highlight of the summer calendar and I’ll be going again this year for the third time.
On Destination Munich you’ll find my review plus all the details of how to buy tickets on the link below. There’s also a video I made at the knights’ festival a few years ago to give you more of taste of the action.
I also have four pages up of professional photos from the bash, check them out here.

Munich has football feva!

As of writing, Germany’s national soccer team looks unstoppable in the FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa. Munich and the whole dang country have got football feva!
If you’re in Munich on the evening of Wednesday, July 6 you can join in the hysteria as the ‘Schland (short for Deutschland) takes on Spain.
Munich’s biggest street party will take place along Ludwig Strasse, where tens of thousands of fans will turn the city into a wash of black, red and gold for the game.
Huge public viewing screens will keep the outdoor crowds up-to-date on the action, but if you’re serious about enjoying the game I recommend you watch it at a pub/restaurant. They practically all have big-screens for the event and you’ll be able to see the play a lot better.
If Germany wins there’ll be a massive street hooha and then onwards to the finale on Sunday, July 11.

What’s new with the site?

June was a huge month for Destination Munich. As you know, I started this ezine.to keep you all up to date with goings on. I also started Content 2.0, a system whereby readers can contribute their own stories and comments on all manner of topics and have them published on the site.
As of writing there are four places you can contribute, see the links below. You can add your stories about day trips from Munich and publish your thoughts on smoking at Oktoberfest. You can tell the world about your own Oktoberfest antics and you can share your general “dinner table” travel stories.
I’ve already kicked off this last section with a tale about an encounter I had with a pair of delightful Serbian gun runners on a night train. Check it out and add your own!

Joke of the month

-Why did the scarecrow win the Nobel Prize? -Because he was “outstanding” in his field!

Thanks for subscribing and I’ll see you back here again about the same time next month. Peace, Stuart
